Frequently Asked Questions

There are a great deal of misconceptions surrounding hypnotherapy and many people are unsure what the process involves, or indeed the type of issues/problems that can be treated. Therefore please find below questions that are frequently raised, but if you have any queries I am always happy to talk to you in further detail over the telephone.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes. However, hypnosis will only work if you want it to.

Will I be asleep or unconscious when I am hypnotized?

No. You will be fully aware of what is going on around you.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is very similar to daydreaming and each and every day we all put ourselves in a state which is very similar to hypnosis and trance. For instance have you ever driven somewhere and arrived at your destination safely but do not remember the journey because your mind was elsewhere? Or times when you are engrossed in a book or movie and the noises in the background fade and you lose track of time? Or instances when someone is talking to you and your mind drifts away from what they are saying which prompts them to say “are you listening to me?” All these examples are of your own natural ability to activate self hypnosis.

Can a Hypnotist make people do immoral or illegal things against their will or make them divulge secrets?

No. A Hypnotist cannot make you do anything against your will or reveal anything you are not willing to. You remain in control at all times.

Can people get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?

No. After a short period of time you would return from the trance state naturally, as you would a daydream.

Are there side effects from hypnosis?

Not in the negative sense, no. However after a session of hypnosis you will feel relaxed and refreshed as if you had just awoken from a good sleep.

Can I drive after a hypnosis session?

Yes. (Assuming of course you could drive before the session!)

What happens during a session?

During the 45 to 90-minute visit to Mind Managed Solutions, and after discussing the reason for your visit and the outcome you wish to achieve, you will sit in a comfortable chair. The hypnotherapist will give suggestions for relaxing in a slow, calm voice, often describing the patient's favourite place. You may focus on a particular spot on the wall, or may notice how heavy your hands and feet feel as they relax. You may feel warm and comfortable, so relaxed that you don't want to move. However, you are not asleep. Your mind is awake and focused, and it is in this focused state of concentration that the practitioner will make suggestions for improved health and pain relief or dealing with the issues which promoted you to make your appointment.

When the hypnotic session is over, the practitioner brings you to a full state of consciousness

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the issue that is being dealt with. Smoking Cessation responds generally to one treatment as do phobias but most other things such as weight loss, confidence building, pain management etc can range from 1 to 6 sessions.

We are all unique and react differently to every situation, so where somebody could respond well in one session, it may take somebody else 6 sessions to treat the same problem.

How long does a session last?

Sessions for adults range from between 45 – 90 minutes and for children between 30 - 45 minutes.
